I was configuring a Renegade and found the manual transmission is gone for the U.S. market. No trims have it available. I would want a base fwd model with the no longer available manual transmission.
I was trying to pick not blue, but this blue is really nice.

I’ve always wanted to give an awd manual one of these a test drive.

My friend has an absolute base model 2014 Patriot and it’s confusingly charming. No power windows, no power locks, 5 speed manual, gutless 4 cyclinder, and laughable build quality all wrapped up in a tiny package. I’d take it over a Versa any day.
I'm not sure how much better the Renegade is but pretty much anything would have to be better.

I really don’t like the Renegades honestly. I’ve driven a few and just can’t stand them. I don’t mean to be a dick, just giving my opinion on them.

I liked them until I drove one. I don’t like feeling like I’m driving from the backseat.

Get the Compass instead.
It’s bigger, still has the manual as an option, costs less, still looks good.

I just don’t like anything about them. Too cramped for my fat ass, no low end torque, I think the interiors are poor quality, just on and on. I hate to be negative, but it’s how I feel.

I have no familiarity with them. I have not even sat in one at a car show.

Hell, you may end up loving it if you try it. Nothing wrong with that. I just personally don’t like them.

My brother almost bought a Patriot configured like that. My dad and I talked him out of it.

I don’t think I have seen one this color either. That is why I picked it over the orange.

I have not driven one but I have driven a fiat panda on which it’s based. The car felt like it was about to fall apart at any moment and the manual transmission sounded like it had bad bearings even though it was a relatively new rental.

I don't want to be accused of defending a Renegade, but rental cars are abused so maybe it was worse for wear even with low miles?

Thats almost certainly for the better, since I’m sure the novelty would have worn off and you’d be left with a hard to sell vehicle with almost no resale value.

Wife and I tried one. Neither of us liked it. We rented a Suzuki Jimny in Iceland. We s uper loved it. Jimny > Renegade. I can see the Renegade’s appeal, just sitting in the driver’s seat killed it for me.

I own one and they are actually not gutless its the delay in the live by wire throttle. If you were in mine it would throw you back in the seat. And mine is the manual 1.4 turbo 4wd

I drove one and my 1.4 turbo with the same transmission will hands down crush a 2.4 manual in a compass . Mainly because there is a hugh aftermarket support for the 1.4 turbo being it comes from a 500 abarth.

I own one. And like all modern vehicles they suffer from throttle delay. Once you add a throttle enhancer they are a blast to drive

Well I’m not sure how they are cramped to sit in. They are larger than a 90s grand Cherokee and have as much space leg space as a jku. I know because my family has a jku and have done plent of long trips in them. People today always make the claim its too small till they see it parked next to a 20 year old full sized suv and realize its actually bigger . Dont be fooled all vehicles today are larger than pervious generation of vehicles. Its all in your head lol. And yes my renegade is actually roomer than a 4 door wrangler.

2015 1.4 turbo 6 speed manual 4x4. Work done.
D eyeme race firm motor mount. 1.5" lift short shift throw shift linkage. Bluespark ecu, go pedal, deleted exhaust to 2.5" straight pipe exhaust. Custom built snorkel, forge motorsports wastegate, gfb blowoff valve. 29.5" kenda meat klever mud terrain tires. Valkyrie offroad skid plate. I built it and it moves. And has plenty of room for my family. And sounds like a mini Ferrari to boot.
People claim they are gutless. They arenot its the delay in the throttle. Live by wire in most vehicles today have input lag. Throttle enhancers cure this problem.

Is the manual still available in the 500X? That’s what I would go for over a renegade since they’re the same car underneath, but dealers can’t move Fiats, so you can get a top-trim one for less than a low-spec Renegade

First thing of note... the new models have moved to a new 1.3L Multiair 3 turbo 4 cyl. Read about it here:
https://moparinsiders.com/the-jeep-renegades-new-1-3-liter-turbo-for-2019/
Bu
t y
eah...the 1.3L turbo
is a newer/better engine,
but you’re also paying a
price premium. That Compass I posted about with the nice colour and the optional nicer wheels
... in Canada that’s around $28
,000 plus
shipping and tax.
The Renegade STARTS at around $27,000 BEFORE any options like the nicer wheels... and that’s with the same 2.4L engine (with the 9 speed auto). You have to pay extra for that 1.3 L turbo. After adding the wheels and the 1.3 L, it’s a $32,000 vehicle.
And is the 1.3 L turbo/automatic Renegade really $4000 better than a manual/2.4L Compass?
For me, I would go with the Compass.
Sure the 2.4L might not be as good as the fairly
new
1.3
L turbo (mainly due to better low end torque... the 1.3
L actually has 1hp
less in North American tune
)
, but it still produces 180HP. And given that the Compass weighs around 3184
lbs, that puts it at just under
18hp/lb.
By comparison, my Fit is around 22hp/lb.
I consider my Fit to be ‘acceptable’ in terms of power. The Compass is better in this regard than my Fit.
So at the very least, the base/manual Compass is also acceptable in terms of power for day to day use. According to this site:
The manual/4x4/2.4L Compass (which weighs 143lbs more)
does 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and has a sub 17 second quarter mile. The FWD one will likely be a bit faster due to less weight.

Looking online I think 2018 was the last model year the Fiat 500X had the manual option.

Is there a lot of aftermarket support for the Renegade? If so, I wonder if you could use a lot of those parts on a 500X. That’d be an interesting vehicle to go off-roading in.

Had a 2016 Latitude 1.4L manual 4x4. Was a wonderful trucklet. Well 4 years later bought a 2019 Trailhawk with 1.3L and 9spd auto.
I cant speak for older models, but the newer turbo drive train is a dream. Decent grunt from a micro engine. 9 spd shifts splendidly.
I was a fan of FCA Renegade before, well now it is 4 years into production and it is a wonderful Colorado vehicle. Add fact I got $9900 off Msrp with barely any haggling. So pretty much love it now. Slate Blue too boot.

Last I checked, there’s an oddly healthy aftermarket for the renegade. I’d imagine everything would fit , considering they’re on the same platform and whatnot. And like I said, you can get 500X’s for dirt cheap compared to a Renegade

I have an orange 2017 4wd Renegade with the 1.4l turbo engine and the manual transmission. It i s a blast to drive. There is a big aftermarket for the engine so it is easy to get more horsepower.
I bet you can find a manual one from last year sitting on some dealers lot. Or get a used one. An alternative would be a Compass, which is the same platform but with the 2.4lt engine. They are a bit bigger and nicer equiped than the Renegade but also fun .

I never got a chance to drive the turbo but I test
drove a 2.4/Auto when they first came out because I liked it on paper... really disappointing - way too much NVH. I might have been OK with it if there were a big discount but (at that point) they weren’t letting any go for less than like
$22
k which was more than the Mazda dealer next door was selling CX-5s for. I walked out so fast.
